School fit

Is Milton a fit?

The school
Milton Academy is a boarding and day school just south of Boston with a close-knit campus.
Culture
The school describes life on campus as collaborative, not competitive.
Class size and courses
The average class has 14 students, and Milton offers nearly 200 courses.
Advisory
Every student has an advisory, a group of 5 to 8 peers and one teacher that stays together throughout their years at Milton.
Grade 9 grading
Grades are not included in Class IV (Grade 9) transcripts, and Grade 9 grades are not reported to colleges.
  1. 01

Ask your student what kind of classroom they want, and let them answer honestly.

  2. 02

Visit or take a virtual tour, and ask what a typical week looks like.

Boarding life

What boarding and day life ask of a student.

Boarding or day
Once admitted, a student may not switch between boarding and day status except in special circumstances.
Houses
Milton has nine boarding houses. Students stay in the same house for all four years in the Upper School.
House mix
Each house is a community that includes students from all four Upper School grades.
House life
Houses share family-style dinners twice a week, and faculty who live in the houses serve as mentors and advisors.
Residential faculty
The school lists a 4:1 ratio of students to residential faculty, with 92 faculty members living on campus.
Host families
Families of Milton students volunteer to host boarders for a weekend night away or a home-cooked meal, and host families are vetted and approved.
Day students
Upper School day students are served lunch and are welcome to join boarders for weekday dinners and weekend activities.
Bus service
Milton offers bus service to and from campus from various locations in Greater Boston. It is an optional program with an added fee.
School day
The academic day ends at 3:20 p.m. Sports, arts and performance activities begin at 3:45 p.m.
  1. 01

Talk through the routines your student manages without reminders, such as sleep, study and laundry.

  2. 02

Decide how you will handle distance, weekends and check-ins, then ask the school how it handles them.

  3. 03

Choose boarding or day before you apply. The choice is hard to change once your student is admitted.
